Blackstone Edge map Blackstone Edge - Hisorical Information

Some climbing was recorded on Blackstone Edge as far back as 1827, this date being carved in the upper walls of South Chimney, though whether the ascent was completed is not known!

Modern records of first ascents began with the publication of Laycock`s `Some Gritstone Climbs` in 1913. The easier routes existed then, but little more was done and as late as 1957 `Climbs on Gritstone` (volume 3) only added Central Groove although Pendulum Swing had been done a little earlier. In the early 1960s Little Miss Id was climbed by Alan `Richard` McHardy and it is also likely that he was responsible for Pendulum Swing Direct at around the same time. Paul Horan then contributed Slim Jim in 1966 and Manibus et Pedibusque the following year, though some tension was used on the latter, which was dispensed with by McHardy shortly afterwards.
